The course will illustrate the variety of offering for high performance computing problems on Microsoft Azure, covering both infrastructure and platform services for a variety of use cases



The course consists in brief lectures followed by guided hands-on labs


Who and Why

People who manage or use high-performance computing clusters will learn how to scale their workloads on the Microsoft cloud



This is a 300-level course. Familiarity with Python and shell scripting is required. Slides and code samples will be provided to illustrate the main concepts


Required on the Day

Attendees will need their laptops and an Azure subscription.  A free subscription can be obtained from here



08:30 - 09:00 Arrive and refreshments
09:00 - 09.30: Introduction to “Big Compute”, i.e. HPC on Azure
09.30 -10:00: CycleCloud or automating cluster operations in Azure
10:00 -10:15: Break
10:15 - 11:00:  Lab - Deploy a “hybrid” cluster with Cycle tools
11:00 - 12:00: Lab - Create a custom application template for a Cycle cluster
12:00 - 12:45: Lunch Break
12:45 - 13:30: Azure Batch, or HPC as a service
13:30 -14:30: Lab - Instrument your application or create your scripts to use Batch
14:30 - 14:45: Break
14:45 - 15:30:  Machine Learning on Batch
15:30 - 16:15: Lab - Parallel processing in R with Microsoft ML Server
16:15 -17:00: Lab - ML model training, scoring and optimization in Python with Azure ML


Workshop Presenter Giovanni Marchetti


Giovanni Marchetti, Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft, has been in IT for over 20 years, in roles ranging from consultant to software engineer and architect. He focuses on artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.  He works with Microsoft partners and customers to solve real-world problems in those areas. He contributes back to the community of practitioners by presenting at workshops around the world
